The National University of Singapore (NUS)
|
BIC at the National University of Singapore was officially formed in 1996 with seed funding from the Economic Development Board (EDB). BIC had vibrant research groups at Kent Ridge Digital Labs (KRDL), the Centre for Natural Product Research (CNPR) and the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB).
BIC worked closely with researchers from the life sciences and information technologies not just in Singapore. It has also established close links with many groups regionally and internationally. BIC was among the first in the region to undertake research in bioinformatics and is until today still playing a leading role in the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet).
Now after 10 years, BIC has streamlined its operations, handing over the national duties to the Bioinformatics Institute (BII) while it concentrates mainly on the academics. BIC is currently under the umbrella of the Office of Life Sciences, Bioinformatics Programme, headed by Prof. Wong Lim Soon, and plays a key role in providing resources and technical support in the areas life science research and education.

BIRC is a recently formed research centre at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), hosted by the School of Computer Engineering (SCE) with the participation of the School of Biological Sciences (SBS) and National Institute of Education (NIE). The BioInformatics Research Centre (BIRC) is the focus of the education, research and development, and human-resource training in bioinformatics at NTU. It brings together scientists and engineers, who are interested in bioinformatics modeling and computation, and fosters cross-disciplinary interactions among different schools at NTU to perform advanced research in bioinformatics. It also makes the necessary partnerships with other research and educational institutions, locally and abroad, to achieve its objectives. The mission of BIRC is to provide the interdisciplinary environment and training for students and researchers to engage in leading and cutting edge research in bioinformatics, and thereby become a part of the life sciences workforce in Singapore and elsewhere. BIRC also facilitates the teaching and research projects of the M.Sc. (Bioinformatics) offered by the School of Computer Engineering and Ph.D. (Computation and Systems Biology) offered by Singapore - MIT Alliance. |
